Stolz completes construction of a new port terminal in Mombasa

In 2018, Stolz began designing a new port terminal in Mombasa, Kenya, on behalf of the multinational Grain Bulk Handlers Ltd (GBHL).

This ambitious project involved the construction of a ship unloading terminal and a storage area consisting of both silos and horizontal warehouses, as well as an intermediate rail loading facility between the quay and the silo, where surplus cargo is loaded directly for storage in the silos/horizontal warehouses. A bagging system and truck loading facility were included in the storage area.

This new facility is designed to receive fertilisers, clinker, coal and cereals.

In 2022, the implementation of this major project was successfully completed.

The port of Mombasa, located on the east coast of Africa, is mainly used for trade with Kenya and Uganda. It also serves as a delivery point for seeds from international aid agencies to other countries such as Somalia, Rwanda and Burundi.

Thanks to this construction, GBHL will have the first modern bulk handling and storage facility in Mombasa for imported seeds and fertilisers, while also strengthening the railway line to Nairobi.

The project should reduce congestion in the existing port and control air pollution in the port area.
